Chutney Powder/Chitlampudi:

This powder is found normally in the Chetty household in Southern India. Its one of the spice powder, which adorns the spice racks to be used as accompaniment for many dishes i.e. rice, idli and dosa. Its majorly had with plain white rice and with onion on the side.

Have not seen or come across this spice powder in any house, very specific to this community 😊 ….! So it is very authentic recipe from Chetty Household…..! This recipe have taken from my mom, which has been passed from her mom…so as said its a recipe passed through generations…!

Ingredients

Ingredients for Chutney Powder

  • 100 gms Dry Red Chillies
  • 10 gms Dry Coconut
  • 50 gms Tamarind
  • 50 gms Jaggery

Dry Roasting

  • 1 Cup Tuvar Dal/Arahar Dal
  • 1 cup Coriander Seeds
  • 1 cup Moong dal
  • 1 cup Channa dal
  • 1 cup urad dal

For Tempering

  • ½ tsp Mustard
  • ½ tsp jeera
  • ½ tsp Urad dal
  • ½ tsp Chana Dal
  • 4 to 5 nos Curry Leaves
  • 2 nos Dry Red Chilies

Instructions

How to Make Chutney Powder

  1. For Chutney Powder:
  2. Dry roast the items under the list “for dry roasting” and keep them aside for cooling.
  3. Grind the other items in the list and grind the roasted items too and mix both of them with salt and adjust to taste accordingly.
  4. IT can be stored in jar for at least 3 to 4 months, when want to use temper it with items above and use it as powder for idli or mix with plain white rice.

Recipe Notes

The  Podi/Chutney Powder/Chitlampudi, can be served with dosa, idlis, plain white rice and any other item which can go with it.
